Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive, chemical-free cosmetic treatment. Microdermabrasion involves exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin. After treatment, a new layer can grow in the old layer’s place. This new layer will be fresher, smoother and more rejuvenated. A wide variety of skin conditions can benefit from microdermabrasion. Some of these are acne, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, wrinkles and sun spots.

What does microdermabrasion do?

Microdermabrasion helps with the renewal of skin tone and skin texture. When buffing away dead skin, the skin experiences a deep exfoliation. Microdermabrasion increases your skin's collagen production. Collagen is a skin protein that keeps skin smooth and tight. Collagen is particularly beneficial for anti-aging purposes.

Microdermabrasion can help you gain more from your skincare products. The outermost skin layer can prevent the proper absorption of skin products into deeper skin layers. By removing this layer, microdermabrasion can increase skincare product absorption and impact. Microdermabrasion can address conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, wrinkles and sun spots.

How is microdermabrasion done?

Microdermabrasion procedures can differ at various clinics. With any microdermabrasion procedure, makeup will first need to be removed. One microdermabrasion method uses a specialised, diamond-tipped instrument called a wand to buff away the outer skin layer. Another microdermabrasion method involves using tiny crystals. These are sprayed onto the skin to produce the scrubbing effect that removes skin. The crystals and skin debris are then removed using a suction device. A microdermabrasion procedure itself will usually last between fifteen and thirty minutes. However, specialists can pair it with other procedures, such as cleanses or masks, to achieve optimal results or help with soothing. The session length will be extended depending on the paired procedures.

How often should you have microdermabrasion?

Depending on your skin, you may need to undergo more frequent microdermabrasion procedures to get your desired results. A single microdermabrasion session is suitable if you aim to make your skin temporarily feel softer and more rejuvenated. You will notice these results immediately. You will require a series of treatments if you want to treat a specific skin concern actively. Everyone’s ideal treatment schedule will differ. A Mosman Spa clinician can recommend one best suited to you.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion procedures are minimally invasive and not typically considered painful. The procedure creates a mild, scratchy sensation in the skin for the duration. Mild discomfort may be felt on the skin for a day or two after the treatment, but often clients feel negligible negative effects. There is also a slight possibility of bruising from the suction device in the crystal microdermabrasion method; however, this is unlikely.

What do I need to do after microdermabrasion?

After microdermabrasion, your skin is temporarily more sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, your clinician will likely recommend using sunscreen and avoiding direct sunlight for a few days. This is because the outer layer of your skin provides sun protection and needs time to regrow. Additionally, your clinician may recommend that you avoid using exfoliants at home for the following week. This is to prevent over-exfoliating the skin, which has already been targeted with microdermabrasion. One of Mosman Spa's specialists can recommend a suitable skincare routine for your skin type.

Is microdermabrasion right for me?

Microdermabrasion is a safe and minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment. Most people do not experience adverse symptoms after undergoing microdermabrasion apart from occasional mild redness or discomfort. However, if you have susceptible skin or a particular skin condition,  it may help to check with a professional. Microdermabrasion is not suited for people currently experiencing sunburn or a rash.
